Dood Ranch Rescue & Sanctuary is a nonprofit rescue dedicated exclusively to helping poodles and poodle mixes who have been abandoned, neglected, surrendered, or displaced. These intelligent, sensitive dogs often require specialized grooming, emotional support, and breed-specific care needs that many shelters struggle to meet.

We exist to fill that gap.

Located in Parker County, TX, we are a foster-based rescue committed to providing every poodle and doodle a safe, supportive place to heal while preparing them for a permanent, loving home.

Founder's Story

Shirley Smelley founded Dood Ranch Rescue & Sanctuary, which began with a deep love for poodles and doodle mixes and a desire to give vulnerable dogs a second chance. After witnessing how many of these dogs were surrendered due to grooming needs, neglect, or misunderstood behaviors, the founder felt called to create a place where these breeds could receive the care, patience, and rehabilitation they deserve.

What started as a personal commitment quickly grew into a mission—one focused on restoring health, trust, and hope, one poodle at a time. Today, Dood Ranch Rescue continues that mission in Parker County, supported by fosters, adopters, volunteers, and donors who believe every doodle deserves a safe and loving home.

Our Adoption Process

Our adoption process is simple and thoughtful. First, submit the adoption application. We’ll then review your home and lifestyle to ensure a good match. Next comes a meet-and-greet, followed by adoption approval and a brief education session to set you and your new companion up for success.
